Out West : a remarkable true story, first hand experiences of life on the range / by Lec Ann Tiffy ; [edited by Elizabeth (Gallihugh) Wilkinson and Margaret (Gallihugh) Neal).

Tiffy, Lec Ann, (author.). Wilkinson, Elizabeth, (editor.). Neal, Margaret, (editor.).

"Advised by her doctor to seek a simple life in the vast open prairies and mountains, Lec Ann Tiffy and her husband Charles, with their three small daughters, set out for Montana in 1883. Lec Ann had been confined to her bed for nearly three years, due to a nervous condition. Charles sold his business, hired five men and a girl to care for the children, and prepared to drive several hundred head of cattle from Missouri to Montana with his wife confined to a bed in one of the wagons. They forded streams and rivers. Floods and deep snows delayed them. Heavy rains mired their wagon wheels. Highwaymen and robbers beset their way. Indians often followed their trail. The air was clean and bracing and the sick woman in the center wagon gradually began to sleep, then to eat and gain strength, and before the end of the journey she was driving one of the wagons. For five years, the family endured cruel winters, loneliness, and constant challenges to survive in the harsh environment of the western plains. However, Lec Ann found happiness, as she was a keen observer of nature and found beauty in the ordinary. She had a natural way with animals and an ability to adapt to every situation, which was invaluable to her rancher husband. The Tiffys returned to Missouri in 1888, after an epic blizzard in which millions of cattle froze on western prairies and ranches, thus ending their homestead venture. Lec Ann, however, had regained her health, which she greatly enjoyed for the rest of her life. Lec Ann's life was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. She never gave up and emerged stronger from every adversity. Her legacy continues to inspire her descendants to this day." --
